Have you ever wondered about how different you sound over email from when you're speaking in person? I had a mini 'this happened to me' moment a few days back when I was emailing my supervisor. Before sending my email off, I gave it a quick skim and it made me realize that I'm so proper with emails with the best wishes and thanks. Emails give me more control and are a better vent to my thoughts. In person, I sometimes blurt out things playing on my mind that I would otherwise not say in writing!
But then in person I'm more natural, more relaxed and happy. Email makes everything so formal and reserved. Meetings are more fun and involve emotions which are evident. I don't have to add a smiley to show that I'm making a joke or that I found something hilarious; and emoticons over email are so not professional. Also, emails make it so difficult to interpret the tone of the sender, and someone who is just being direct could appear curt. This ultimately boils down to a trade off.
I would pick face to face meetings over written messages. You?
